    • Do not accept US aid conditioned with progress on ‘Scorecard’, come out of US led war on terror: Nawa-e-Waqt

    Pakistan’s Urdu dailies have criticized US for linking aids to performance and reports that US is adopting a “scorecard” for the release of military aid. The Nawa-e-Waqt Urdu daily in its editorial quotes Wall Street Joural (WSJ) as reporting that “the White House has prepared a secret scorecard and has started conditioning the award of security assistance to Pakistan on whether Islamabad shows progress on a secret scorecard of US objectives to combat al Qaeda and its militant allies.” The Nawa-e-Waqt writes that this is not the first time that we have heard that US aid would be given to Pakistan with some riders attached. But the special report by the WSJ indicates that “it is not a notional demand” and now all the aid to Pakistan would be given after ensuring that Pakistan meets the US objective, writes the daily. Against the backdrop of this report, the daily asks that “what is the compulsion of our leadership to accept the aid and why they want to put the national interest at stake in accepting the US aid.”

    “Whether the time has not come to say good bye to the US and search new path for self reliance?”, the daily asks further. In its concluding remarks, the Nawa-e-Waqt writes that “China has already extended hand of cooperation in this regard and President Zardari has already expressed the fact that Pakistan appreciates Chinese cooperation for country’s progress and development.” The daily suggests that “it is the opportune time to say no to the US and strengthen Sino-Pak friendship in the region. Coming out of US’s led war on terror is in the interest of Pakistan and national interest of Pakistan should be dear our leaders.”

    Look at the alternatives; resist all pressure from the US: Jang

    The Jang Urdu Daily quoting the Wall Street Journal’s revelation writes in editorial that the US has conditioned the security aid to Pakistan with the progress in combating Al-Qaeda and its militant allies. The daily writes that “the US is leaving Afghanistan without achieving much” and to penalize Pakistan for its failure it has attached further conditioned to pressurize Pakistan to “do more” in the war against terror. The daily writes that this is a fact that US pressurizes, threats and uses force to get its interests fulfilled” and this is also part of that strategy.

    The daily further writes that “our leadership has played their role in making Pakistan a US’s salve. Pervez Musharraf showed enough weakness in this regard but present government is not much different from him.” We had been stressing on the fact that the country no country should ignore its interest even if it is weak. Our leadership should have understood that 18 billion Pakistan were not ready to compromise on their self reliance. For our defence we have one of the best military and the nuclear bomb…so we should not fear from any negative step taken by the US.”

    In its conclusion, the Jang writes that “we should not fear to face the new situation as we have already sailed through similar situations in the past…Our government should think of alternatives. We should contact other friendly nations including some NATO members who could sympathize with us. We should have relations with the US on equal footing and should resist all pressure from the US to safeguard our national interest.”

    Do we have an Anna Hazare in Pakistan?: Ausaf

    The Ausaf Urdu daily has written an editorial on Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption. The daily writes that “Anna Hazare is a social worker and not a political leader. Despite that he showed courage and started campaign against corruption by starting a fast. Thousands of people have been supporting his endeavour.”

    “On the other hand, we (Pakistanis) have many ‘leaders’. But even if they give call for any thing not more than hundred will come out from their homes. It is mainly because they issue strong statements against corruption but take no practical steps in this direction. Fasting is not their cup of tea. They are slave of their stomach and those who are slave of their stomach are Geeder ( Jackal) and not the leader.”
