    Britishers will not succeed in conquering Afghans: Ummat
    Commenting upon newly appointed British General David Richard’s remark that the United Kingdom’s forces will stay in Afghanistan for 40 years, the Ummat Urdu daily in its editorial says that “if the British General looks into Britain’s history would know that despite occupying India for 150 years, Britain could not succeed in conquering Afghanistan. Likewise, Russia which dreamt of occupying Afghanistan disintegrated.” The editorial says that “whether the British dream of occupying Afghanistan for four years or 400 years, they will not succeed in conquering Afghans.”

    Government should not delay investigation of Niaz Naik’s death
    Commenting upon the suspicious death of former Pakistani Foreign Secretary Niaz Naik the Jasarat Urdu Daily in its editorial says that he was a seasoned diplomat and has been involved in track II diplomacy for improving relations with neighbouring countries. The daily says that even after retirement he had been active in diplomacy and his services were needed at a time when the region has become the centre of political and diplomatic activity. The editorial says that if the government delays the investigation into his suspicious death as it has been doing in previous cases, “it will amount to treason”.

    Beitullah Mehsud killed, Now Stop Waziristan operation: Nawa-e-Waqt
    Against the backdrop of reports of killing of Beitullah Mehsud, the Nawa-e-Waqt Urdu daily in its editorial states that if the reports of his death are true, then it is a severe blow to the Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The newspaper suggests the government has achieved its target of eliminating Beitullah Mehsud it should now stop the Waziristan operation so that the people in the tribal areas should understand that these operations were against a single person and not the entire community.
    The editorial also suggests opening talks with remnants of the Taliban. To the Taliban the paper suggests that “it should know that entering into a fierce battle with a regular Army is a dangerous game”.

    The fight for distribution of Beitullah’s wealth will lead to disintegration of TTP: Izhar Bhatti
    Columnist Izhar Bhatti in his opinion Column in Al-Akhbar Urdu daily opines that Beitullah had amassed billions of rupees and a dispute over the distribution of the amount could be a possible reason for the leak of his whereabouts by some of his colleagues that resulted in a US drone attack in which he was killed. The bloody scramble over the distribution of wealth also hints toward the fact. Izhar opines that the “dispute over the distribution of his wealth” will lead to a disintegration of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. He, however, says that his death is still a mystery and the Taliban are delaying the confirmation till they reach an agreement on Mehsud’s’s successor.

    Beitullah use to run syndicate of terrorists in Karachi and South Punjab for bank robbery and extortion: Jang
    The Jang Urdu daily quoting its own investigative report says that the main reason behind the clashes within different groups of TTP after Beitullah Mehsud, was to wrest power for gaining control over two billion rupees and arms and ammunition worth one billion. The editorial says that according to intelligence sources these amounts are either buried in some tunnel or are in circulation through some banks in Pakistan and Gulf countries. The editorial says that “foreign enemies” and Al Qaeda had convinced Beitullah that an Islamic Emirate would be created in Waziristan and he would be its first Amir. The editorial says that he used to personally monitor disbursal of ten thousand rupees to the households of his armed men. The editorial states that Beitullah used to run a syndicate of terrorists in Karachi and South Punjab who robbed banks and extorted money through kidnappings and they use to send the money directly to Beitullah.
    The editorial questions the ineptness of the Pakistani intelligence agencies who could not unearth or check his large scale money laundering activities and asks the government to ensure prosecution of intelligence officers for their failure.

    Insurgency of Taliban is not yet over: Khabrein
    Commenting on the reports of Beitullah Mehsud’s death the Khabrein Urdu daily in its editorial says that we should not be “over excited over the death of Beitullah Mehsud as the fight over selection of his successor is indicative of the fact that the Taliban insurgency is not yet over”. The editorial says that “we need to be cautious both from our so called ally and enemies” as the agenda of Pakistan’s enemies to snatch its atomic asset “is not buried with the death of Beitullah.” The paper says that the way Beitullah was funded by foreign countries with million of rupees, his successor could also be assisted by Pakistan’s enemies therefore, the people and military needs to be cautious.

    Impress upon India to implement UN resolutions on Kashmir, Nawa-e-Waqt advises General Deepak Kapoor
    Reacting over recent remarks by General Deepak Kapoor in which he said that Pakistan was following a dichotomous policy in fighting terrorism -- operating against militants within the country and perpetuating terror in India, the Nawa-e-Waqt Urdu daily in its editorial says that “ whatever the fighters are doing in occupied Kashmir can be terrorism in the eyes of India, but in our view it is struggle for liberation”. The newspaper says that “because of its geographical location and majority of Muslim population, it is a part of Pakistan”. The newspaper says that the Kashmir issue should be resolved according to UN resolutions and General Deepak Kapoor should impress upon India to implement these resolutions. The newspaper states that if this issue is resolved, he will not blame Pakistan either for infiltration or promoting terrorism in Kashmir.

    Elimination of terrorism impossible without Detoxification of brain: Jang
    The Jang daily in its editorial says that to root out terrorist brainwashing of common people is necessary. The daily says that the government should eliminate the fact that a few terrorists were able to influence a large number of people for their cause. The daily advises the government that “since the terrorists used religion to influence common people’s mind, it should take assistance of religious leaders to detoxify their minds which is the only way to break militancy in the country”. Jang advises government to publish such literature in the Pushto language and distribute it among the tribal people. Quoting a Hadis (Saying of Prophet Muhammad) “poverty brings people closer to Kufr”, the daily says that the government should give its utmost priority to alleviate poverty from the region.

    Government is silent on US statement on drone attack as it will expose its complicity: Ishtiaque Beig
    Giving a detailed account of killings by Beitullah Mehsud, columnist Ishtiaque Baig in an opinion column in the Jang Urdu daily states that the US shared the video of the drone attack with Pakistani authorities. Without quoting the source, the columnist says that the video shows Beitullah sleeping on the roof of his house before the attack and the doctor administering on him had leaked the information to Pakistani intelligence officials who passed this information on about his whereabouts to the US. Baig states that his dead body could be identified from his head as his lower portion was destroyed as a result of the attack and as per the tribal traditional culture; he was buried before the sun rise. The columnist says that the US wanted to carry out another drone attack on his funeral ceremony to target other wanted Taliban militants but the Pakistani government did not give its assent fearing casualties of innocent people. He says that the Pakistani government is silent about the statement by the US and that this was a joint operation which will expose the Pakistani government of its complicity in US drone attacks.

    We should unite as a nation for Kashmir’s independence: Nawa-e-Waqt
    Lauding Sardar Yaqub Khan’s remark that they will liberate ‘Occupied Kashmir’ within two years, the Nawa-e-Waqt Urdu daily in its editorial says that his “commitment and efforts are appreciable”. The Nawa-e-Waqt quotes Sardar Yaqub Khan as saying that “President Zardari’s first and last wish is to liberate Kashmir” and states that if this is his wish then certainly the entire valley will be liberated form India’s subjugation. The newspaper says that we should unite as a nation for Kashmir’s independence and raise this issue before the international community.

    Call for Musharraf’s prosecution; a political slogan: Khabrein
    Commenting on the ongoing efforts of presenting a resolution in Pakistan’s National Assembly for prosecuting Musharraf, the Khabrein Urdu daily in its editorial opines that though the Muslim League (N) has announced that it will take all the political parties into confidence on the issue, it has done nothing in this regard. It has not formulated a draft of the resolution. The newspaper says that the “demand of prosecution of Musharraf by the Muslim League (N) is only a political slogan”
    The paper says that according to Article 6 of the Constitution not only the person who abrogates or subverts the constitution will be deemed treasonous but also those who aided and abetted the subversion would also fall in this category. This would mean that many of the serving personnel in the Pakistan army and lawyers will also fall in this ambit. Thus would not be easy to adopt a unanimous resolution. The PML (N) also knows that it is a difficult process. The paper says that the issue will also die down with the passage of time, though the PML (N) would keep up this rhetoric for some time. There are chances that PML (N) would like to implicate Musharraf in Sardar Bugti’s murder case instead of prosecuting him under Article 6.
